Bridge between particle accelerators and cosmic radiation: physicists develop a new approach for simulations

Cosmic ray air shower created by a 1 TeV proton hitting the atmosphere 20 km above the Earth. The shower was simulated using the AIRES package. 

How can particle collisions at the highest energies or cosmic radiation in the Earth’s atmosphere be simulated? This question is addressed in a comprehensive review article that was recently published in the renowned journal Nature Reviews Physics. Prof. Dr. Marcus Bleicher from the Institute for Theoretical Physics is among the authors of the international research team.

In their publication “Global tuning of hadronic interaction models with accelerator-based and astroparticle data”, the researchers present a new approach to systematically improve simulation programs for particle collisions. Such event generators are used both in accelerator experiments, such as those at the Large Hadron Collider, and in the analysis of cosmic radiation. Until now, they have mostly been developed solely on the basis of accelerator data. The researchers now show that a joint optimization using data from both fields can significantly increase the accuracy of the simulations.
