Michael Kinski, Professor of Japanese Cultural and Intellectual History at Goethe University Frankfurt, has been awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon by the Japanese government in recognition of his outstanding contribution to fostering bilateral relations and mutual understanding between Japan and Germany. The decoration was presented at a ceremony held at the Japanese Consulate General in Frankfurt.
Born in 1962, Michael Kinski studied at Ruhr University Bochum before receiving a Japanese government scholarship to pursue research for his dissertation at the University of Tokyo. He completed his doctorate at the University of Tübingen, where he worked at the Institute of Japanese Studies from 1991 to 1993. He then led the Center for Japanese Language at the University of Tübingen’s Kyoto office until 1998. He earned his Habilitation at Humboldt University of Berlin in 2004 and has been teaching and conducting research at Goethe University Frankfurt since 2009.
Professor Kinski explores Japanese cultural and intellectual history from the early modern period to the present. His research ranges from ethical and social norms in historical etiquette literature to questions of value systems, food culture, and representations of childhood. The Japanese Consulate General highlighted his sustained contribution to strengthening academic ties and deepening mutual understanding between the two countries.
