In welchem Ausma\u00df, zeigte sich zuletzt vor 59 Millionen Jahren, als es zum Austausch gro\u00dfer Mengen an Wasser zwischen dem n\u00f6rdlichen und s\u00fcdlichen Atlantik kam. Das fanden Forscher aus Deutschland und Gro\u00dfbritannien heraus, indem sie Neodym-Isotope aus Sedimentproben vom Meeresboden aus beiden Regionen des Atlantiks miteinander verglichen. Wie sie in einer aktuellen Studie in Nature Communications mitteilen, kam es durch die verst\u00e4rkte Zirkulation des Meereswassers und die gleichzeitige Zunahme des CO<sub>2<\/sub>-Gehalts in der Atmosph\u00e4re zu einem klimatischen Wendepunkt. Mit der gleichm\u00e4\u00dfigeren W\u00e4rmeverteilung \u00fcber die Erde endete eine mehrere Millionen Jahre andauernde Kaltphase und es begann eine neue Warmzeit.<\/p>\n<p>Neodym(Nd)-Isotope dienen als Tracer f\u00fcr Wassermassen. Sie gelangen aus Fl\u00fcssen oder \u00fcber Sedimente ins Meer oder werden als Bestandteile von Staub ins Wasser geweht. Wenn das Oberfl\u00e4chenwasser zum Meeresgrund sinkt, tr\u00e4gt es einen f\u00fcr seine Entstehungszeit charakteristischen Nd-Isotopen-Fingerabdruck des umgebenden Festlands in die Tiefe. Dort wird es von tiefen Meeresstr\u00f6mungen erfasst, mit anderen Wassermassen vermischt und nach und nach in das Sediment des Meeresbodens eingelagert. Die entstehenden Sedimentschichten haben sich als gute Archive f\u00fcr Meeresstr\u00f6mungen und das Klima vergangener Zeiten erwiesen.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34067\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34067\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/aktuelles.uni-frankfurt.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/blog_pm-klima-kreidezeit-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-34067\" src=\"https:\/\/aktuelles.uni-frankfurt.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/blog_pm-klima-kreidezeit-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aktuelles.uni-frankfurt.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/blog_pm-klima-kreidezeit-1.jpg 650w, https:\/\/aktuelles.uni-frankfurt.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/blog_pm-klima-kreidezeit-1-300x208.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34067\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Grafik: Sietske Batenburg<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Die Geschichte, die die Forscher aus der Analyse der Nd-Isotope in Bohrkernen aus Tiefseebohrungen rekonstruiert haben, beginnt in der sp\u00e4ten Kreidezeit, als die Erde sich zwischen zwei Treibhaus-Phasen befand. Das Klima hatte sich f\u00fcr einige zehn Millionen Jahre abgek\u00fchlt, nachdem es vor etwa 90 Millionen Jahren in der Mitte der Kreidezeit seine hei\u00dfeste Phase erreicht hatte. Aber trotz der langen Abk\u00fchlphase war der Meeresspiegel zum Ende der Kreidezeit vor 66 Millionen Jahren h\u00f6her als heute.<\/p>\n<p>Der Atlantische Ozean war noch jung und deutlich kleiner, und das nord- und s\u00fcdatlantische Becken war flacher als heute. Die Ozeanpassage, die auf der H\u00f6he des \u00c4quators zwischen S\u00fcdamerika und Afrika verlief, erlaubte w\u00e4hrend der sp\u00e4ten Kreidezeit nur einen oberfl\u00e4chlichen Wasseraustausch. Aktive Unterwasser-Vulkane bildeten Berge und Plateaus auf dem Meeresboden, die eine freie Zirkulation der Tiefenstr\u00f6mungen behinderten. Im s\u00fcdlichen Atlantik bildete sich der Walfischr\u00fccken als steiler R\u00fccken \u00fcber einem vulkanischen Hotspot. Er befand sich teilweise sogar oberhalb des Meeresspiegels.<\/p>\n<p>Als der Atlantische Ozean sich weiter \u00f6ffnete, k\u00fchlte die Erdkruste am Meeresboden ab und die vulkanische Aktivit\u00e4t lie\u00df nach. Die Becken wurden tiefer und gr\u00f6\u00dfer, die untermeerischen Plateaus und Meeresr\u00fccken sanken zusammen mit der Erdkruste ab. An einem bestimmten Punkt konnte das Tiefenwasser aus dem s\u00fcdlichen Ozean den Walfischr\u00fccken in Richtung Norden \u00fcberqueren und die tieferen Becken des Atlantiks f\u00fcllen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201eIn unserer Studie haben wir erstmals herausgefunden, wann und wie diese Verbindung entstand\u201c, sagt Sietske Batenburg, die Erstautorin der Studie. \u201eVor 59 Millionen Jahren wurde der Atlantische Ozean Teil der globalen thermohalinen Zirkulation, also jener Str\u00f6mung, die vier der f\u00fcnf Weltmeere miteinander in einem gro\u00dfen, weltumspannenden Kreislauf verbindet.\u201c<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34068\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34068\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/aktuelles.uni-frankfurt.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/blog_pm-klima-kreidezeit2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-34068\" src=\"https:\/\/aktuelles.uni-frankfurt.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/blog_pm-klima-kreidezeit2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aktuelles.uni-frankfurt.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/blog_pm-klima-kreidezeit2.jpg 650w, https:\/\/aktuelles.uni-frankfurt.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/blog_pm-klima-kreidezeit2-300x208.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34068\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Grafik: Sietske Batenburg<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Die Studie hat gezeigt: Um die Rolle der Meeresstr\u00f6mungen in fr\u00fcheren Warmzeiten zu verstehen, ist es wichtig, zwischen geographischen Einfl\u00fcssen und klimatischen Antrieben zu unterscheiden. Auch f\u00fcr die Gegenwart k\u00f6nnen wir etwas daraus lernen, denn das Treibhausklima der Kreidezeit und des fr\u00fchen Eoz\u00e4ns k\u00f6nnten als Modelle f\u00fcr k\u00fcnftige Klimaver\u00e4nderungen dienen.<\/p>\n<p>Diese Forschung ist das Ergebnis einer internationalen Zusammenarbeit der Goethe-Universit\u00e4t Frankfurt; der Ruprecht-Karls-Universit\u00e4t Heidelberg; des GEOMAR-Helmholtz Zentrums f\u00fcr Ozeanforschung Kiel; der Bundesanstalt f\u00fcr Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe in Hannover, der Royal Holloway University of London und der University of Oxford. Das Projekt wurde durch die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft gef\u00f6rdert.<\/p>\n<p>Die in der vorliegenden Studie verwendeten Sedimentproben stammen aus Tiefsee-Bohrkernen.
