This collaboration broke new ground with the first machine-generated book to be published by a scholarly publisher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The book offers an overview of new\nresearch publications on lithium-ion batteries \u2013 a structured, automatically generated\nsummary of a large number of current research articles. It gives researchers an\noverview of the latest research in this rapidly growing field, allowing them to\nmanage the information efficiently. The book is available as free download.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The process, developed under the direction of\nAssistant Professor Christian Chiarcos with the Applied Computational\nLinguistics (ACoLi) lab of Goethe University, consists of various components that\nanalyse text content so that relevant publications from the content platform <em>SpringerLink<\/em> are automatically selected\nand processed. These peer-reviewed Springer Nature publications undergo a\nsimilarity-based clustering in order to arrange the source documents into\ncoherent chapters and sections. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Succinct summaries of the articles are created within\nthe chapters. Extracted and paraphrased passages from the source documents are\nreferenced by hyperlinks which allow readers to further explore the original document.\nAutomatically created introductions, tables of contents and reference sections\nfacilitate the orientation within the book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis publication has allowed us to demonstrate the\ndegree to which the challenges of machine-generated publications can be solved\nwhen experts from scientific publishers collaborate with computer linguists,\u201d\nexplained Professor Chiarcos. \u201cThe project also enabled us to better understand\nthe expectations of authors, editors, publishers and consumers \u2013 with regard to\nboth scientific and economic requirements.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Henning Schoenenberger, Director Product Data &amp; Metadata Management at Springer Nature, added: \u201cWhile research articles and books written by researchers and authors will continue to play a crucial role in scientific publishing, we foresee many different content types in academic publishing in the future: from yet entirely human-created content creation to a variety of blended man-machine text generation to entirely machine-generated text.
