An\nadditional SFB on RNA research has been extended for the second time. The\nfunding of two powerful research collaborations underlines the excellent work being\ndone in the field of RNA research at Goethe University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new SFB comprising a consortium of 30\nrenowned researchers will investigate the influence non-coded RNAs have on the\ndevelopment, regulation and cellular processes of the cardiovascular system.\nThe extended SFB deals with the structure and function of different RNA variants\nin biology and chemistry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ribonucleic acids, or RNAs, were long considered merely messenger\nmolecules that coded genetic information for the creation of proteins.\nMeanwhile, it is known that over 90 percent of the RNA molecules carry out an\nastonishing variety of other tasks. Many of them regulate processes within the\ncell (siRNA, miRNA and sRNA) and others create fascinating three-dimensional\nstructures and serve as enzymes of switches for cellular processes. Non-coded\nRNAs also play a significant role in cardiovascular diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new trans-regional SFB \u201cNon-coding RNA in the cardiovascular\nsystem,\u201d coordinated by Professor Stefanie Dimmeler from the Institute for\nCardiovascular Regeneration at Goethe University Frankfurt and Professor Stefan\nEngelhardt from the Institute for Pharmacology and Toxicology at TUM will\nresearch how non-coded RNA is created and transported in the cardiovascular\nsystem. It will furthermore look into how it influences cellular processes and\nwhich role it plays in the occurrence and cure of cardiovascular diseases. Over\nthe long term, the collaborative also hopes to find new therapeutic target\nmolecules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additional partners are the Ludwig-Maximilian\u2019s-Universit\u00e4t (LMU), the\nMax Planck Institute for Heart and Lung Research in Bad Nauheim, and the\nHannover Medical School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>SFB begins third funding period <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The focus of the extended SFB \u201cMolecular\nPrinciples of RNA-based regulation\u201d, headed by Professor Harald Schwalbe,\nInstitute for Organic Chemistry and Chemical Biology, is the function of RNA in\nchemistry and biology. The researchers from Goethe University and TU Darmstadt\nare particularly interested in how RNAs regulate gene expression. During the\nfirst two funding periods (eight years in total), the researchers established\ndiverse spectroscopic methods to decode the structure of the complex\nmacromolecules. These methods are now to be transferred from <em>in vitro<\/em> systems (prepared molecules in\ntest tubes) to living systems (<em>in vivo<\/em>).\nThe researchers expect new insights into the function of different RNA variants\nin living cells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stefanie Dimmeler and Harald Schwalbe agree:\n\u201cThe continuing funding of RNA research in Frankfurt will help Goethe\nUniversity
