The specialist in immune research thus ranks at one of the best\nresearchers in Europe and the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a special distinction for the whole team, who were\nable to illuminate fundamental aspects of the adaptive immune system,\u201d says\nRobert Tamp\u00e9. \u201cThese discoveries will not only find their way into textbooks,\nbut will also provide a variety of therapeutic approaches for combatting\ninfectious diseases and cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just last year,\nTamp\u00e9 was awarded an \u201cERC Advanced Grant\u201d by the European Research Council amounting\nto 2.5 million euros. This project is dedicated to the question of how certain\nviruses circumvent control by the immune system. It particularly looks at\nmolecular transport mechanisms that carry fragments of invading viruses to the\ncell\u2019s surface where they attract the attention of the T-cells of the immune\nsystem. Knowing how viruses bypass this process promises progress in the field\nof infectious and autoimmune diseases as well as in cancer research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Reinhard Koselleck project, with 1.5\nmillion euros in funding from the German Research Foundation (DFG), also deals\nwith the quality control and assembly by macromolecular complexes that trigger\nthe immune system. Through the Koselleck program, the DFG enables outstanding\nresearchers to pursue exceptionally innovative and higher-risk projects. Tamp\u00e9\nand his team are investigating the organization of the antigen quality control\nlocations both inside the cell and in the cell membrane. The challenge lies in\ndecoding the structure and function of larger, differently assembled protein\ncomplexes which, moreover, rarely exist in intercellular membranes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Robert Tamp\u00e9 studied chemistry at the Technical University\nDarmstadt where he received his doctorate in biochemistry. As Max-Kade Fellow,\nhe explored mechanistic aspects of antigen presentation at Stanford University.\nFrom 1992 to 1998, he headed a research group at the Max Planck Institute of\nBiochemistry in Martinsried and he was appointed as Assistant Professor in\nBiochemistry at the Technical University of Munich in 1996. From 1996 to 1998\nhe was DFG Heisenberg Fellow. Subsequently, he headed the Institute of\nPhysiological Chemistry at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Marburg.\nSince 2001, he has been the director of the Institute of Biochemistry at Goethe\nUniversity. He also holds honorary visiting professorships at the University of\nOxford and University of Kyoto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EMBO is an organization of more than 1800 leading researchers that promotes excellence in the life sciences.
