Gottschalk<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The nervous system of the threadworm <em>C. elegans<\/em> is simple at first sight: it\nconsists of 302 neurons, some of which, however, have several functions. The\nneuron \u201cRIS\u201d, known as a sleep neuron, can therefore put the worm into a long\nsleep \u2013 or also just briefly stop its locomotion, as a group of scientists led\nby Goethe University have now discovered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wagner Steuer Costa in the team of Alexander\nGottschalk, Professor for Molecular Cell Biology and Neurobiochemistry,\ndiscovered the sleep neuron RIS a few years ago by coincidence \u2013 simultaneously\nwith other groups. To understand the function of individual neurons in the\nplexus, the researchers use genetic engineering to cause them to produce\nlight-sensitive proteins. With these \u201cphoto-switches\u201d, the neurons can be\nactivated or turned off in the transparent worm using light radiation of a\ncertain wavelength. \u201cWhen we saw that the worm froze when this neuron was\nstimulated by light, we were quite amazed. It was the beginning of a study that\ntook several years,\u201d Gottschalk recalls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The RIS neuron puts <em>C. elegans<\/em> to sleep when it is active for minutes or hours \u2013 for\nexample after the shedding of the cuticle (a secreted form of skin) that is a\nprocess in the animal\u2019s development. It also sleeps in order to recover after\nexperiencing cellular stress. On the other hand, the neuron serves to stop the\nworm during locomotion \u2013 for example, if it wants to change direction or to avoid\ndanger. The neuron then slows down the animal\u2019s motion so that it has time to\ndecide if it wants to continue crawling.&nbsp;\nIn this case the neuron is only active for a few seconds. \u201cSuch stop\nneurons have only recently been discovered. This is the first one of its kind\nin a worm,\u201d explains Gottschalk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly, the axon of the RIS neuron is\napparently branched, with the two branches having different functions, so that\nRIS not only slows motions but can also introduce backwards motion. This is\nreported by Gottschalk and his collaboration partners, Professor Ernst Stelzer\nfrom Goethe University, Professor Sabine Fischer from the University of\nW\u00fcrzburg, researchers from the American Vanderbilt University in Nashville and KU\nLeuven in the current issue of \u201cNature Communications\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"548\" src=\"https:\/\/aktuelles.uni-frankfurt.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/wurm-mit-RIS-1024x548.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-39052\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aktuelles.uni-frankfurt.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/wurm-mit-RIS-1024x548.png 1024w, https:\/\/aktuelles.uni-frankfurt.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/wurm-mit-RIS-300x161.png 300w, https:\/\/aktuelles.uni-frankfurt.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/wurm-mit-RIS-768x411.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>The RIS neuron (green) in the throat of the threadworm <em>C. elegans<\/em>. In the course of evolution they were then assigned to two\ndifferent systems in the brain and further developed,\u201d says Gottschalk. It\u2019s a theme\nthat will certainly be found to recur once other nerve cells of the worm are\nbetter understood. \u201cThe nervous system of <em>C.\nelegans<\/em> can be viewed as a kind of evolutionary test bed. If it works\nthere, it will be used again and further refined in more complex animals.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The discovery of the double function of RIS is also an example of how a permanently connected neuronal network can be additionally operated by a \u201cwireless\u201d network of neuropeptides and neuromodulators. This enables several functional networks to be realised on a single anatomical network, enormously increasing the functionality of the worm\u2019s brain, as well as being very economical. \u201cIt should no longer be said that worm neurons are simple.
