On March 25, the \u201cInternational Conference on Learning Analytics & Knowledge 2020\u201d (LAK20) will be carried out from Frankfurt am Main as a complete online format. Responding rapidly to the spread of the coronavirus, the team of organisers has rescheduled and completely switched the event, joined by attendees across the world, to a virtual conference. Learning Analytics reflects the measurement and analysis of data from technology-based learning processes that are, for instance, gained in online courses or software tutorials. Learning is thus meant to be supported and optimised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEspecially at an international level, Learning\nAnalytics has been shown to have a relevant impact on education\u201c, says\nProfessor Dr. Hendrik Drachsler from DIPF | Leibniz Institute for Research and\nInformation in Education and the Goethe University Frankfurt, who has held a\nleading role in organising the conference. DIPF and the University, together with Technical\nUniversity (TU) Darmstadt, are hosting the LAK this year, which is operated by\na German team for the first time. Drachsler explains that Learning Analytics\nis, for example, used to promote students in ongoing learning processes, or in\nsetting up learner groups according to certain communication patterns which\nreveal insights into their collaborative needs. Drachsler is a computer\nscientist and Professor for Educational Technologies. He emphasizes the high\nrelevance of data protection in the discipline: \u201cThe purpose of technology is\nsolely to serve the learners\u2019 needs.\u201c To promote exchange in this field the\nteam of organisers have done their utmost to ensure that the conference can\ntake place even in the current situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


\nConference in a virtual space<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The organisers have responded without delay and made\nsure that the conference, which was originally planned as a venue in Frankfurt\nam Main, can go online in a pioneering virtual format. Registered\nparticipants can, for example, dial into video conference rooms where live\ntalks are broadcast from anywhere in the world. Moderated chats then offer an\nopportunity to pose and answer questions. Contributions are recorded, subject\nto contributors\u2019 consent. It is thus possible to flexibly watch the videos.\nPosters and applications are also presented in purely virtual settings. The\nprogramme spans long periods of the day, to accommodate for participants across\nseven time zones. The team is confident that the format with its spatial\nindependence and flexible timing also offers incentives for future conferences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thematically,\nthe tenth LAK focuses on „shaping the future of the field\u201d. The conference is held once a year at alternating\nvenues, under the auspices of the international network \u201cSociety for Learning\nAnalytics Research\u201c (SoLAR). \u201cPossible developmental lines will be traced\nfor the next ten years and beyond. At the core, we will investigate ways of\nmeasuring learning and teaching and which insights can thus be gained, how they\ncan be put to an optimal use and what needs to be considered regarding the\ndifferent areas of implementation and scales of Learning Analytics\u201d, Dr.\nChristoph Rensing from the TU Darmstadt illustrates, a co-organiser of the\nLAK20. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
