This was revealed in a study that originated at Goethe University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When active sport is at the centre of a\nprofession or education, pain is often a constant companion \u2013 pain being\ndefined in this case as physical and psychological symptoms. \u201cOne in three top\nathletes suffers significant pain,\u201d explains Dr. Johannes Fleckenstein, private\nlecturer at Goethe University. This is an issue that generally tends to be\nneglected, but he has made it the main focus of his classes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This led to a master\u2019s thesis in which the\nauthor Anke Bumann looks predominantly at the situation of sport students.\nBumann sent her questionnaire to the students of 89 sport sciences institutes\nin German-speaking regions. The response was impressive: 865 individuals took\npart, 664 completed the entire form, some adding very detailed answers in their\nown words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The basis of the survey was the \u201cGerman\npain questionnaire\u201d of the German Pain Society, supplemented by specific\naspects such as athleticism, extent of training, self-efficacy and resilience.\nThey were asked in which and how many regions of the body pain occurs, which\ninjuries and other diagnoses are present, as well as psychological factors,\nalcohol consumption and sleep quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study shows clearly: one in four of\nthe presumably healthy young individuals suffers from pain and shows occurrence\nof what are known as biopsychosocial factors that can foster pain, in\nparticular stress resulting from high performance pressure. More than half of\nthose surveyed feel pain in two or more regions of the body \u2013 although most of\nthem report a relatively high pain tolerance. Compared with others their age,\nsport students have more frequent depressions, anxiety and stress, while at the\nsame time their self-compassion was significantly lower. On average, the\nstudents train five to seven hours a week and consume more painkillers\n(analgesics) and alcohol.&nbsp; More than 60\npercent report of sleep disorders. The findings are the same for all types of\nsports, with only the location of the pain being different. The lack of self-compassion\nfor their own bodies and its limitations leads, however, to the condition\nbecoming chronic and increasingly difficult to change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The qualitative answers make it clear that\nthe need is great: There was a frequent expression of happiness that attention was\nnow being paid to the issue and for the opportunity to express one\u2019s problems.\nFleckenstein hopes that if students confront and discuss this issue early it will\nhelp them deal with it more openly \u2013 without the fear of being branded as\n\u201cwimps\u201d. In his opinion, teachers could also make a positive contribution by\ngiving more consideration to the health of the candidates during practical\nexams. And when the sport scientists complete their studies and assume corresponding\nprofessional positions, they could gradually contribute to a change in\nattitudes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have to finally stop trivialising the\nissue of pain in sports,\u201d demands Johannes Fleckenstein. It is alarming that\npain disorders already occur in young and physically active students in this\nnumber. As professionalism increases, surmise the authors, the number of those\naffected also increases: \u201cAn enormously high performance is demanded, and there\nis a lot of money involved,\u201d says the sport medicine expert.
