November 2022, wurde das John McCloy Transatlantic Forum vor vollem Auditorium im Vortragssaal des Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften feierlich er\u00f6ffnet. Der Name des Forums erinnert an John J. McCloy, der als amerikanischer Hoher Kommissar von 1949 bis 1952 in Frankfurt am Main amtierte.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anwesend waren der Pr\u00e4sident der Goethe-Universit\u00e4t Professor <strong>Enrico Schleiff<\/strong>, der Oberb\u00fcrgermeister der Stadt Bad Homburg <strong>Alexander W. Hetjes<\/strong> und die Initiatoren des Forums: der Direktor des Kollegs Professor <strong>Matthias Lutz-Bachmann<\/strong>, die Sprecher des Forschungsschwerpunktes \u201eDemocratic Vistas\u201c Professor <strong>Gunther Hellmann<\/strong> und Professor <strong>Johannes V\u00f6lz<\/strong> sowie die Bad Homburger F\u00f6rderer des Forums <strong>Bernd von Maltzan <\/strong>und <strong>Felix Hufeld<\/strong>. Als besonderer Gast war <strong>John J. McCloy II<\/strong>&nbsp; zugegen, der Sohn des amerikanischen Hohen Kommissars John J. McCloy. Professor <strong>Charles A. Kupchan<\/strong> von der Georgetown University hielt den Festvortrag. Der Experte f\u00fcr die amerikanisch-europ\u00e4ischen Beziehungen war Sonderberater von Pr\u00e4sident Barack Obama und Mitglied im amerikanischen Sicherheitsrat. Er sprach \u00fcber die fortdauernden St\u00e4rken und die Verletzlichkeit des Westens in der k\u00fcnftigen Welt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Ziele des neuen Forums<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Das neue Forum am Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften bringt Pers\u00f6nlichkeiten aus Wissenschaft und Politik, Kultur und Wirtschaft zum Gespr\u00e4ch \u00fcber die Bedeutung der transatlantischen Beziehungen in der von Krisen gepr\u00e4gten Gegenwart zusammen. Dadurch m\u00f6chte es dazu beitragen, die im transatlantischen Kontext herausgebildete Auspr\u00e4gung der Demokratie zu st\u00e4rken und unter den Bedingungen einer sich ver\u00e4ndernden Weltordnung weiterzuentwickeln.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mit seinem Namen erinnert das Forum an das Engagement der Amerikaner f\u00fcr den Aufbau der bundesrepublikanischen Demokratie in der Nachkriegszeit. Johannes V\u00f6lz, Co-Sprecher des begleitenden Forschungsschwerpunktes \u201eDemocratic Vistas\u201c, betonte allerdings: \u201eEs geht uns nicht darum, die alte transatlantische Wertegemeinschaft unreflektiert wiederzubeleben.\u201c&nbsp; Das w\u00e4re, so V\u00f6lz, zu kurzsichtig. Das Forum bleibe der transatlantischen Idee verbunden, aber heute gelte es, die westlichen Demokratien in ihrer Verflechtung mit einer Nord-S\u00fcd- und einer Ost-West-Achse zu betrachten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>B\u00fcrgerschaftliches Engagement f\u00fcr das Forum<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Initiiert wurde das neue Forum vom Kollegdirektor Matthias Lutz-Bachmann und den beiden Sprechern des Forschungsprojektes. Bernd von Maltzan begleitete und f\u00f6rderte das Forum von Anfang an. Denn, so von Maltzan: \u201eWie Au\u00dfenministerin Baerbock es j\u00fcngst formulierte: es kommt jetzt darauf an, das \u201atransatlantische Moment\u2019 zu nutzen, um den aktuellen, bedrohlichen Anfechtungen der Demokratie etwas entgegenzusetzen. Dazu m\u00f6chte ich als jemand, der in der Nachkriegszeit aufwuchs und den Amerikanern f\u00fcr ihren Beitrag zum Aufbau der deutschen Zivilgesellschaft zutiefst dankbar ist, beitragen, indem ich den Gedankenaustausch von Wissenschaft und Entscheidungstr\u00e4gern aus Politik und Gesellschaft am John McCloy Transatlantic Forum unterst\u00fctze.\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>F\u00fcr die k\u00fcnftigen Aktivit\u00e4ten des Forums und des Forschungsschwerpunktes sind bereits F\u00f6rderzusagen gemacht worden, sodass bereits ab Herbst 2023 Demokratieforscher*innen zu Gastaufenthalten an das Kolleg kommen k\u00f6nnen, um sich in das Forum und den Forschungsschwerpunkt einzubringen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Wohnte in Bad Homburg: Der Namensgeber des Forums John J. McCloy<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>John J. McCloy amtierte als amerikanischen Hoher Kommissar von 1949 bis 1952 in Frankfurt am Main und wohnte mit seiner Familie im \u201eHaus Hohenbuchen\u201c am Rande des Bad Homburger Kurparks. Sein Sohn, der heute fast 85j\u00e4hrige John J. McCloy II hat lebhafte und gute Erinnerungen an die Jahre, die er als Jugendlicher dort verbrachte. In seinem Gru\u00dfwort bei der Er\u00f6ffnung des Forums betonte er, dass die Benennung des Forums nach seinem Vater f\u00fcr ihn eine gro\u00dfe Ehre und Freude sei. Denn das Forum kn\u00fcpfe an die grundlegende \u00dcberzeugung seiner Eltern an, dass Kultur, Wissenschaft, Bildung und soziales Engagement entscheidende Bausteine f\u00fcr die Entwicklung demokratischer Gesellschaften seien. So war seine Mutter f\u00fcr ihr soziales Engagement ebenso wie f\u00fcr die gro\u00dfen Gesellschaften, zu denen sie einlud, in ganz Bad Homburg und dar\u00fcber hinaus bekannt. Bad Homburgs Oberb\u00fcrgermeister Alexander Hetjes \u00fcberreichte dem Ehrengast einen gro\u00dfen Fotoband \u00fcber die Geschichte Bad Homburgs mit den Worten: \u201eDer Name von John J.
