Ich freue mich daher sehr f\u00fcr Prof. Helfrich, dessen au\u00dfergew\u00f6hnlichen Leistungen in der Naturstoffforschung in besonderer Weise gew\u00fcrdigt werden und der jetzt seine zukunftsweisenden wissenschaftlichen Projekte zur Entdeckung neuer potenzieller Wirkstoffe in Bakterien langfristig weiterverfolgen kann.\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prof. Dr. Eric Helfrich befasst sich in seinem ERC-Projekt \u201eCOMBINE\u201c (\u201eBacterial Alkaloid Biosynthesis off the Beaten Path: Compartmentalization and Non-Enzymatic Transformations in Non-Canonical Alkaloid Biosynthesis\u201c) damit, wie Bakterien komplexe Biomolek\u00fcle herstellen, die die Basis vieler Medikamente sind. Diese sogenannten Naturstoffe werden durch vielstufige enzymatische Prozesse gebildet, wobei in Bakterien alle Gene, die f\u00fcr diese Enzyme kodieren, nebeneinander in der DNA vorliegen. Daher kann man durch Genom-Analysen das Potenzial eines Bakteriums zur Produktion neuer Naturstoffe ermitteln.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eric Helfrich befasst sich mit Naturstoffen, die sich dieser scheinbar universellen Regel widersetzten. Im Speziellen geht es um spontane Reaktionen, die vermutlich in eigens daf\u00fcr vorgesehenen Reaktionskammern innerhalb der Bakterienzelle ablaufen. Da diese Reaktionen nicht von Enzymen katalysiert werden, deren Bauplan im Genom vorliegt, lassen sich spontane Reaktionen bisher nicht vorhersagen. Daher wird das Team von Eric Helfrich auf k\u00fcnstlicher Intelligenz basierende indirekte Verfahren entwickeln, um spontane Reaktion vorherzusagen und die assoziierten neuartigen Naturstoffe zu charakterisieren. Einsichten in diese nicht-enzymatischen Vorg\u00e4nge werden anschlie\u00dfend f\u00fcr die Erzeugung einer neuen Generation von Wirkstoffen verwendet, bei denen zwei Wirkstoffe mittels synthetischer Biologie so ver\u00e4ndert werden, dass sie bei ihrer biotechnologischen Produktion spontan zu bi-spezifischen Wirkstoffen fusionieren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Der Europ\u00e4ische Forschungsrat (European Research Council, ERC) ist eine von der Europ\u00e4ischen Kommission eingerichtete Institution zur Finanzierung grundlagenorientierter Forschung. Er besteht seit 2007 unter mehreren EU-Rahmenprogrammen f\u00fcr Forschung und Innovation. An seiner Spitze steht der Scientific Council, ein Gremium internationaler Spitzenwissenschaftlerinnen und \u2013wissenschaftlern, der f\u00fcr die strategische Ausrichtung des ERC verantwortlich ist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mit Starting Grants unterst\u00fctzt der ERC exzellente Forscherinnen und Forscher, die sich in den ersten Jahren nach ihrer Promotion ein eigenes Forschungsteam aufbauen und sich mit einem viel versprechenden Forschungsprojekt wissenschaftlich etablieren wollen. F\u00fcr die Projekte erhalten sie bis zu 1,5 Millionen Euro \u00fcber einen Zeitraum von bis zu f\u00fcnf Jahren. <a
