Februar 2025 erh\u00e4lt Luciano Rezzolla, Senior Fellow am Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies (FIAS), den PRACE HPC Excellence Award 2024. Der Preis w\u00fcrdigt bahnbrechende Forschungen und wissenschaftliche Fortschritte durch den Einsatz von Hochleistungsrechnern (high-performance computing, HPC). Rezzolla und sein Team waren an den ersten Bildern supermassereicher Schwarzer L\u00f6cher beteiligt und erm\u00f6glichten deren Interpretation mit Hilfe numerischer Simulationen und dem Aufbau eines theoretischen Rahmens, der Interpretationen und tiefergehende Informationen erlaubt. Das Team um den theoretischen Physiker von FIAS und Goethe-Universit\u00e4t trug wesentlich zur theoretischen Modellierung der durch die Teleskope aufgenommenen Daten bei. Schwarze L\u00f6cher abzubilden ist nicht einfach, da nur sehr wenig bekannt ist \u00fcber die physikalischen Bedingungen in der N\u00e4he des Schwarzen Lochs und die Dynamik des Plasmas, das Licht aussendet, bevor es vom Schwarzen Loch verschluckt wird. Daher sind ausgekl\u00fcgelte Methoden und Hochleistungsrechner f\u00fcr die astronomische Forschung von gro\u00dfer Bedeutung.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rezzolla betont, hinter dem gewaltigen Aufwand f\u00fcr diese Bilder eines supermassereichen Schwarzen Lochs stecke die gewaltige gemeinsame Anstrengung vieler Forschender weltweit. Die Interpretation der physikalischen Bedeutung eines solchen Bildes und die Bestimmung seiner Auswirkungen auf unser Verst\u00e4ndnis von Schwarzen L\u00f6chern sei nur m\u00f6glich durch fortschrittliche theoretische Modellierung und Hochleistungsrechner. \u201eIch f\u00fchle mich privilegiert, weil ich Zugang zu diesen Forschungseinrichtungen am FIAS und der Goethe-Universit\u00e4t habe\u201c, so Rezzolla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Den Preis in H\u00f6he von 20.000 Euro samt Urkunde und einem gravierten Pokal erh\u00e4lt der FIAS Fellow am 5. Februar 2025 im Rahmen des PRACE Intersection Seminars in der Fondation Universitaire in Br\u00fcssel (Belgien). PRACE steht f\u00fcr <em>Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe<\/em> und ist eine europ\u00e4ische Initiative zur B\u00fcndelung der Rechenleistung von Hochleistungsrechnern in 25 europ\u00e4ischen L\u00e4ndern.
