In the face of a widely diagnosed \u201ccrisis of democracy\u201d calls for more trust and social cohesion are getting widespread. However, in what sense is democracy a matter of trust? Might distrust and skepticism not also have their place in the world of democratic politics \u2013 and if so, what exactly should these attitudes be like in order not to undermine and perhaps even strengthen democracies? The political theorist Jan-Werner M\u00fcller will reflect on these questions in his keynote lecture \u2018On Distrust in Democracy,\u2019 upon invitation by the Research Centre \u201cNormative Orders\u201d. M\u00fcller is a professor at Princeton and well-known for his perceptive analyses of populism and the liberalism of fear. Recent publications include Democracy Rules <\/em>and Furcht und Freiheit.
