The first speaker Peter Fenves (Northwestern University) is the author of several books, including The Messianic Reduction, and co-editor of two Benjamin translations, Toward the Critique of Violence and On Goethe. The starting point for this presentation lies in Benjamin\u2018s attempt to write a habilitation-thesis on the theme of \u2018language and logic\u2019. The original framework for pursuing this topic collapsed when Benjamin reread Heidegger\u2018s habilitationthesis. Starting anew, Benjamin conceives a new framework that revolves around a formal distinction between knowing (Wissen) and cognition (Erkenntnis). In the process, the language-and-logic theme develops into a philosophical program that, in contrast to the earlier \u2018\u00dcber das Programm der kommenden Philosophie\u2019 is principally concerned with a certain\u00a0 concept of truth.<\/p>\n

Thema von Samuel Webers Vortrag ist Martin Heideggers zweimaliger Versuch, anhand einer Lekt\u00fcre des ersten Stasimons aus Sophokles\u2019 Antigone die Frage des Unheimlichen zu entfalten:\u00a0 erstmals in seiner 1935 gehaltenen Vorlesung, die 1953 als Einf\u00fchrung in die Metaphysik ver\u00f6ffentlicht wurde, ein zweites Mal in seiner 1942 gehaltenen Vorlesung \u00fcber H\u00f6lderlins Gedicht \u201eDer Ister\u201c. 1936 deutet Heidegger die Schlussworte des Chors noch als \u201eAbwehr\u201c des Unheimlichen, w\u00e4hrend er sie 1942 als \u201edie h\u00f6chste Dichtung\u201c bezeichnet. Wie kommt es zu dieser radikalen Umkehr seiner fr\u00fcheren Interpretation?<\/p>\n

Samuel Weber studierte bei Paul de Man und Theodor Adorno. Er lehrte Komparatistik an der FU Berlin, Johns Hopkins, UCLA und Northwestern.<\/p>\n
