In ihrer Keynote beim gemeinsamen Jahresworkshop des neuen DFG-Graduiertenkollegs \u201e\u00c4sthetik der Demokratie\u201c und des Forschungsschwerpunkts \u201eDemocratic Vistas\u201c am Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften der Goethe-Universit\u00e4t geht sie diesem Thema erneut nach \u2013 diesmal mit dem Fokus auf ein Gef\u00fchl, das in Deutschland besonders kontrovers diskutiert wird: Schuld.<\/p>\n<p>In ihrem englischsprachigen Vortrag \u201eIs Guilt Good for Democracy?\u201c untersucht Illouz die kulturellen und historischen Prozesse, durch die das Schuldgef\u00fchl seit den 1980er Jahren zu einer zentralen Emotion im Selbstverst\u00e4ndnis liberaler Demokratien geworden ist. Sie beleuchtet die normativen und politischen Implikationen dieser Entwicklung und fragt, inwiefern Schuld produktiv oder hemmend auf demokratische Gesellschaften wirkt. Ins Thema einf\u00fchren wird Prof. Johannes V\u00f6lz, Sprecher des Graduiertenkollegs und Ko-Sprecher von \u201eDemocratic Vistas\u201c.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eva Illouz <\/strong>ist Professorin f\u00fcr Soziologie an der Hebrew University of Jerusalem und der \u00c9cole des hautes \u00e9tudes en sciences sociales (EHESS) in Paris. Sie hat zahlreiche B\u00fccher zur Soziologie der Emotionen, zum Konsumkapitalismus und zur Soziologie der Liebe publiziert. F\u00fcr ihr Werk erhielt sie u.a. den Frank-Schirrmacher-Preis 2024, den Aby Warburg Preis 2024 und den EMET-Preis f\u00fcr Sozialwissenschaften. Zuletzt erschienen: Undemokratische Emotionen. Israeli-French sociologist Eva Illouz has explored in several widely discussed works \u2013 including The Emotional Life of Populism: How Fear, Disgust, Resentment, and Love Undermine Democracy and Explosive Emotions: How Modern Society Shapes What We Feel \u2013 how fear, resentment, anxiety, disgust, and love emerge from social conditions and influence democracy. In her keynote at the joint annual workshop of the new German Research Foundation (DFG) Research Training Group \u201cAesthetics of Democracy\u201d and Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften\u2019s research focus \u201cDemocratic Vistas\u201d, she revisits this subject \u2013 this time with a focus on an emotion that sparks particularly intense debate in Germany: guilt.<\/p>\n<p>In her English-language lecture, \u201cIs Guilt Good for Democracy?\u201d, Illouz retraces the cultural and historical processes through which guilt has become a central emotion in the self-conception of liberal democracies since the 1980s. She explores the normative and political implications of this transformation and asks whether guilt acts as a productive or inhibiting force in democratic societies. Prof. Johannes V\u00f6lz, spokesperson for the Research Training Group and co-spokesperson of \u201cDemocratic Vistas,\u201d will introduce the topic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eva Illouz<\/strong> is a professor of sociology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and director of studies at the \u00c9cole des hautes \u00e9tudes en sciences sociales (EHESS) in Paris. She has published numerous books on the sociology of emotions, consumer capitalism, and modern culture.
