Discussing conflicts constructively: Information for respectful cooperation at the start of the new academic year

The new academic year has begun, for some for the first time. In addition to novel experiences, this also means meeting new people, as well as discovering, expanding, sharing and discussing knowledge. That notwithstanding, we are living in an age characterized by numerous conflicts and wars across the world – a situation that results in stress or uncertainty for many members of our university. We must make space to accommodate for this discourse, especially on critical and controversial topics. Different perspectives and life experiences, personal or family encounters with violence, suffering and hardship necessarily will influence and complicate these discussions. This, however, cannot result in a situation where constructive discourse is no longer possible. It is the responsibility of all of us – teachers and researchers, staff and students – to create a respectful, peaceful and appreciative work and study environment.
