Classicism in Asia: “A Certain Quality of Feeling”: Nie Gannu’s Classical-Style Poetry in Socialist China
12. Juni | 18:00 - 20:00
Vortrag von Prof. Dr. Xiaofei Tian (Harvard University) “A Certain Quality of Feeling”: Nie Gannu’s Classical-Style Poetry in Socialist China
“I believe classical-style poetry is suitable for the expression of a certain quality of feeling. For over twenty years, I happened to experience that very quality of feeling, which then came out as poetry” (Nie Gannu). Nie Gannu, a vocal proponent of New Style Poetry in China’s early-twentieth-century New Culture Movement who had always vehemently opposed classical-style poetry, became one of the best, most innovative practitioners of classical-style poetry in the 1960s and 1970s. What is this “certain quality of feeling” and how does classical poetic form prove the best venue for conveying it during the politically chaotic decades known as the disastrous years of the Cultural Revolution? This talk discusses the dialectics of “old and new” in the cultural politics of writing classical-style poetry in Maoist China.
