Classicism in Asia: Changing Sites and Contestation of the ‘Classical’ in Southeast Asia: Indonesia
Mittwoch, 22. Mai 2019, 18:00 bis 20:00
Vortrag von Dr. Amanda Rath „Changing Sites and Contestation of the ‘Classical’ in Southeast Asia: Indonesia“
In the modern nation-states of insular Southeast Asia, notions of “the” Classical are both a legacy of colonial and anti-colonial, as well as of (later) post-colonial and de-colonial, discourses. As such, these notions are often posited as sites of contestation, of the “Western”, of “the own modern”, of the more or less centralized modern nation-state(s) under the hegemony of particular ethnic, religious, and social groups, and so forth. At the same time, efforts of canonizing particular historical elements as “classical” parts of an imagined national culture must be seen within the larger framework of Nation-building. This talk addresses this intricate relationship in the caseof modern and contemporary art discourses and practices of post-Independence Indonesia, as the highly complex ethnic composition of this country gives ample evidence of the broader issues at stake.
