Ethnologisches Sommersymposium / A tale of two minds
Freitag, 5. Juli 2019, 12:00 bis 12:30
Vortrag von Florin Cristea, Institut für Ethnologie Freie Universität Berlin „A tale of two minds – The morality of knowing and not knowing in a mental hospital in the Tanga region of Tanzania“
My presentation examines the lived space of a psychiatric hospital in Tanzania. Here, biomedical and religious insights about living a „good life“ governed the institution’s moral code, which labeled non-biomedical explanations for diseases as “bad knowledge.” However, this moral code was only rarely instilled to “patients.” I will address the question of how patients managed to circumvent the hospital’s moral order and show that they developed coping mechanisms based on not knowing the name or possible outcomes of their illness. This lack of diagnostic focus often rendered patients impermeable to the institution’s moral tissue and allowed maintaining a link to non-clinical moral worlds.
