On Distrust in Democracy
21. November 2024, 18:00 bis 20:00
In the face of a widely diagnosed “crisis of democracy” calls for more trust and social cohesion are getting widespread. However, in what sense is democracy a matter of trust? Might distrust and skepticism not also have their place in the world of democratic politics – and if so, what exactly should these attitudes be like in order not to undermine and perhaps even strengthen democracies? The political theorist Jan-Werner Müller will reflect on these questions in his keynote lecture ‘On Distrust in Democracy,’ upon invitation by the Research Centre “Normative Orders”. Müller is a professor at Princeton and well-known for his perceptive analyses of populism and the liberalism of fear. Recent publications include Democracy Rules and Furcht und Freiheit. Für einen anderen Liberalismus.
