Waterlands: Political Geomorphologies At A Muddy Edge. Anna Lowenhaupt Tsing – Dagmar Westberg Lectures 2023
Monday, 11. December 2023, 16:00
Anna Tsing, Professor of Anthropology at the University of California, Santa Cruz, is without any doubt one of the most inspiring anthropologists of our times. She will deliver the 2023 Dagmar Westberg Lectures as part of a distinguished professorship. Expanding on her long-term interest in describing the Anthropocene bottom-up and through its constitutive patches (rather than assuming a planet-wide phenomenon that touches down in particular places), she speaks her lectures about her most recent research project on land-water interactions on the western coast of Papua, Indonesia. Drawing on fresh ethnographic material, she explores the long-standing ways in which people on the western coast of Papua live in swamps but also how settler occupation and city building has created a whole new set of challenges, including chronic flooding.
