October is book fair season – as the world’s largest fair for books, media, and publishing opens its doors to publishers, authors, and readers. Every year, Goethe University scholars and students are part of the extensive cultural program. This year’s contributions include a lecture on the student literary magazine “Johnny”, a book discussion featuring, among others, the Research Center Normative Orders and our “Knowledge on Tap” science talk, which has been invited to the book fair for the second time.

In “Aufrecht. Überleben im Zeitalter der Extreme”, Albanian-British political scientist and philosopher Lea Ypi embarks on a journey into her family’s past, intertwining personal memories with the major political and societal upheavals of the 20th century. She reflects on experiences with the traditions of Ottoman aristocracy, the emergence of new nation-states in the Balkans, as well as the fascist occupation and communist rule in Albania.
Her book is much more than a travel narrative. It is a philosophical and deeply human reflection on how we, as individuals, endure extreme situations and on the significance of freedom, responsibility, and dignity in such times. At the event, Lea Ypi, Professor of Political Theory at the London School of Economics, will discuss these topics with Dr. Jonela Hoxhaj, attorney and Honorary Consul of the Republic of Albania in Frankfurt, and Prof. Dr. Rainer Forst, Professor of Political Theory and Philosophy and Director of Goethe University’s Research Center Normative Orders. The discussion will be moderated by the center’s managing director, Rebecca C. Schmidt. The event is organized by the Research Center Normative Orders in collaboration with Goethe University’s “Women with Format in Science and Business Network”, the Honorary Consulate of the Republic of Albania in Frankfurt, and Suhrkamp Verlag.

“Wissen angezapft” (Knowledge on Tap) – The Goethe University Science Talk
Young Professionals Day
Saturday, October 18, 2024, 10 AM, Stage 4.0 (Stand H104),
Frankfurt Book Fair, Ludwig-Erhard-Anlage 1, 60327 Frankfurt
Transported from its usual setting between sofas and bar counters to a stage at the world’s largest book fair, curiosity and research come together at the upcoming Goethe University Science Talk. Two researchers, a moderator, and live music will provide fascinating insights. The discussion will explore big questions, small coincidences, breakthroughs, and failures – and the stories behind them. What secret signals do frogs send during mating? How has the language of chemistry evolved over time? What do the Middle Ages sound like, and what do day-songs, Minnesang, and epic tales reveal about that era?
Guests include biologist Lisa M. Schulte and medieval philologist Holger Runow, with topics such as “The Chemistry is Right: How Amphibians Communicate During Mating” and “The Sound of the Middle Ages: What King Arthur and Walther von der Vogelweide Have to Tell Us.” The discussion will be moderated by Stephan Hübner (HR) and accompanied by pianist Lorenzo Huthmacher.
