The University of Bern’s Faculty of Medicine has awarded Prof. Dr. Stefanie Dimmeler the honorary title of „Doctor medicinae honoris causa“, in recognition of her scientific achievements in understanding the pathophysiology of cardiovascular diseases. In addition to highlighting Prof. Dimmeler’s achievements in researching the biological processes of endothelial cells (which line the coronary vessels), the laudatory speech also recognized her work on post-infarct heart regeneration, which laid the foundations for her current research into therapeutic approaches to improve the vascular and cardiac regeneration of heart tissue. The faculty also honored the enthusiasm with which Prof. Dimmeler dedicates herself to and inspires others for her field of research.

Stefanie Dimmeler is Professor of Molecular Cardiology and Director of the Institute for Cardiovascular Regeneration at Goethe University Frankfurt. She is spokesperson of the Cardio-Pulmonary Institute (CPI) cluster of excellence, funded by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG), board spokesperson of the German Centre for Cardiovascular Research (Deutsches Zentrum für Herz-Kreislauf-Forschung, DZHK), and was a member of the German Ethics Council from 2008 to 2012. In addition to numerous other awards – including, most recently, the German Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology’s Otto Warburg Medal and the European Society of Cardiology’s Gold Medal –she received the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize for her research on programmed cell death in 2005. In 2022, she received her third Advanced Grant from the European Research Council (ERC).
