Goethe University and University Hospital Frankfurt donation barometer increases to 1.35 million euros – smallest individual donation of 2 cents from “payback points”
FRANKFURT. Numerous larger and smaller individual donations to the Goethe Corona Fund within a week have caused it to grow by another 350,000 euros – ranging from the funding for a pipetting robot for more than 100,000 euros by the Dr. Hans Messer Foundation to the donation of 2 cents in the form of “payback” points. The funds will be used primarily for corona research in Frankfurt Virology and Intensive Medicine. Beyond this, it will be used to help carry out training courses and purchase protective clothing. While the University Hospital Frankfurt continues to prepare for the massive increase in the number of COVID-19 patients, the willingness to donate to the Goethe Corona Fund has not abated: companies and entrepreneurs, foundations and private citizens donate small and large amounts and go on to promote the Goethe Corona Fund themselves. Goethe University alumni connected the University Hospital with face mask manufacturers, the Association of Friends and Sponsors provide support with their own funds, and are also raising additional third-party funds.
More than 600 individuals and institutions donated over the past week, including:

Professor Birgitta Wolff, Goethe University President is delighted: “The wave of solidarity with our corona researchers is simply fantastic. We are facing tremendous challenges in this crisis, and science will make a decisive contribution to mastering it. But for this we need your support as well: please do not waver in your commitment.”
Professor Jürgen Graf, medical director of the University Hospital Frankfurt, says, “For us, the donations are invaluable moral and as well as material support! Everyone who donates is actively contributing to the creation of options for overcoming this medical situation, which is unprecedented for many of us. The structure of university medicine in Germany with the complete integration of teaching, research and patient care, and above all the University Hospital Frankfurt, provide an excellent basis for this. Thank you very much for your support in transforming knowledge into health!”
Professor Sandra Ciesek, head of the Institute for Medical Virology at the University Hospital Frankfurt, explains, “We are very moved by the great willingness to donate. The pipetting robot, for example, will make high throughput screening of many thousands of substances with possible antiviral effect much easier. With the help of the robot, we can work precisely with small volumes, which is essential in this kind of work. In addition, with the automatic pipetting of thousands of samples, pipetting mistakes will be reduced and we can work significantly faster.”
