Beyond the Archive | Symposium Homage to Roland Spiller

11. Juli 2025, 9:00 bis 18:00

Transcultural and Transmedia Perspectives

Veranstaltungsplakat Beyond the Archive

Archiving is not merely the act of collecting and preserving information; it is also a performative act of collective memory and the exercise of power. Archives are not solely composed of documents or records stored in dusty or pristine shelves but also of contexts and narratives conveyed in diverse forms: linguistic, visual, auditory, gestural, and embodied. With the advent of the digital age, a new dimension has been added. Therefore, archives are not only subjects of historical, social, and political research but also serve as inspiring sources for literature, film, and media.

Five years have passed since the founding of the Trans.Arch. Archives in Transition: Collective Memories and Subaltern Uses project. During this time, networks have been established between Europe and Latin America to explore the functions and challenges of archives from both a historical perspective and in relation to contemporary societal issues.

Trans.Arch enables reflections on new historical and social constructs to be linked with political, legal, cultural, and artistic applications of archives, particularly concerning migrant collectives and queer dissidents. This is also the central focus of this conference, which serves as an epilogue to years of research, exchange, and exploration while also marking the farewell symposium for Roland Spiller. Consequently, some of his key research themes will be highlighted: movements, border crossings, and transitions, from the private to the public, from the individual to the collective, from fiction to history, from dreams to reality, from the analog to the digital, as well as the diverse uses of archives and the theoretical and methodological approaches they generate. In this context, the aesthetics of memory, in literature, mass media, and film, and their relationship with the archive will also be examined.

As the title suggests, this symposium aims to explore transcultural and transmedia perspectives of the “beyond,” emerging from Spiller’s scholarly career and the complex field of archival research, not to provide a definitive answer, but to open new avenues.
