Nationwide and regional research on population health in focus – strengthening of study programs and teaching – support for the digitalization of the Public Health Service – funded by the Hessian Ministry of Health
The Hessian Ministry of Health is funding a Professorship for Public Health at Goethe University to sustainably strengthen the Public Health Service. The new appointee, Prof. Dr. med. Jon Genuneit, is now taking up his position. Among other things, he will establish regional research in the field of population health, further develop a specialized curriculum, conduct and support research projects on the digitalization of the Public Health Service, and work closely with the State Office for Health and Care (Landesamt für Gesundheit und Pflege).

The Hessian Minister of Health, Diana Stolz, explains: “With the establishment of a Professorship for Public Health, Hesse is creating a central bridge between science and practice: It strengthens the evidence-based work of the public health offices, connects students, researchers, and the ‘Landesamt für Gesundheit und Pflege’, and thus contributes to a modern and future-proof Public Health Service in Hesse.”
Prof. Bernhard Brüne, Vice President of Goethe University for Research, is convinced:
“We are fortunate to have appointed Prof. Jon Genuneit, with his epidemiological expertise, to the Professorship for Public Health – especially as the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has shown how vital close interaction between science, practice, and policy is. We are confident that Prof. Genuneit, through his research and teaching, will accompany and sustainably strengthen the further development of the Public Health Service.”
Jon Genuneit, born in 1978, was Professor of Pediatric Epidemiology at Leipzig University from 2021 to 2025. After studying medicine in Ulm, he received his doctorate from Ulm University in 2010. In 2009, he began studying epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of London, completing his Master of Science degree in 2011. He subsequently qualified as a professor (Habilitation) in Epidemiology at Ulm University in 2014. Among other roles, Genuneit was a board and founding member of the Epidemiology Interest Group of the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI). Since September 15, 2025, he has been Professor for Public Health at Goethe University Frankfurt.
The professorship will initially be established for a period of five years and is funded through the Hessian Pact for the Public Health Service.
