At a ceremony on Campus Westend, the prize for the best doctoral supervision 2023 was awarded to three professors of Goethe University.

On Thursday, October 12, 2023, three outstanding supervisors of Goethe University were awarded the prize for the best doctoral supervision by the Goethe Research Academy for Early Career Researchers (GRADE). The prize was awarded for the fourth time. It is intended to make the commitment of PhD supervisors visible, to strengthen their work and to recognize their special achievements.

In contrast to previous awards, this year the selection committee, consisting of GRADE’s scientific advisory board, decided to award the prize in three categories. Of the 43 nominees from all departments, the following supervisors were awarded:

  • Prof. Dr. Bernd Skiera, FB 02 (All-round outstanding supervisor)
  • Prof. Dr. Sarah Speck, FB 03 (New-generation dissertation supervisor)
  • Prof. Dr. Eckhard Boles, FB 15 (Life-long supervision achievement)

In their nominations, the doctoral candidates emphasized in particular the supervisors high level of professional competence and the intensive involvement with their research projects, as well as their support for the academic and professional development of the supervisees. They also highlighted the supervisors’ sensitivity to personal circumstances and family-friendliness.

Each of the award winners of 2023 can look forward to the prize money of 2,500 euros, which is intended to the further support of early career researchers at Goethe University.

During the event, two winners of the GRADE final scholarships for international doctoral candidates were also honored. Financed by the Foundation for the Promotion of International Academic Relations of the Johann Wolfgang v. Goethe University, Anna Iakovets (FB 10) and Feifei Xue (FB 15) receive temporary funding of 1000 euros per month for their dissertation projects.

GRADE congratulates all nominees as well as the winners and thanks all guests for a successful award ceremony, which contributed to the visibility of the topic of doctoral supervision at Goethe University.
