
Biochemist Dr. Rana Hussein Ali has received the “For Women in Science” award, worth € 25,000, for her pioneering research into photosynthesis. The award, which is presented by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization), L’Oréal Germany, and the German Humboldt Network, honors four outstanding female researchers in German science each year.
Dr. Rana Hussein Alifrom the Institute of Biochemistry at Goethe University is using high-resolution methods to investigate the processes of proton release in photosystem II. Her work could support the future development of groundbreaking concepts for sustainable energy technologies.
Under the motto „The world needs science – and science needs women,“ the L’Oréal Foundation and UNESCO have been committed to promoting outstanding women in research since 1998. With their „For Women in Science“ program, which has also been established in Germany since 2007, they have already supported 4,400 female scientists worldwide, including seven who went on to win the Nobel Prize. In Germany, the program is organized in cooperation with the German Humboldt Network e.V. To date, more than 50 young female scientists in Germany have received the coveted award. The award aims to raise the profile of outstanding female scientists and at the same time strengthen structures that give women equal access to science.
