“Fixing Futures”: Symposium, Book Launch, and Guided Dialogues at Goethe University’s Museum Giersch

FRANKFURT. In June 2025, Museum Giersch of Goethe University (MGGU) will focus entirely on the theme of futures. With a series of multidisciplinary events – from an international symposium and a book launch by Josh Wodak to guided dialogues and workshops – the museum is inviting the public to engage in conversations about the challenges and opportunities of tomorrow.

Symposium “Seeing the Unforeseeable: Art, Science, and the Imagining of Futures”

Saturday, June 14, 2025, 2–7 p.m
How can art and science help us imagine futures that are not yet visible? In this multidisciplinary symposium, Dr. Steven Gonzalez and Dr. Julia Schubert bring together renowned artists and scholars to discuss speculative visions, technological utopias, and our responsibility for planetary futures. The event explores the interdependencies between art, science, and technology, and the new perspectives that emerge from their collaboration.

Book Launch: Josh Wodak – “Petrified. Living During a Rupture of Life on Earth”

Sunday, June 15, 2025, 11 a.m.
Artist and scholar Josh Wodak presents his new book “Petrified. Living During a Rupture of Life on Earth”, which addresses the ecological and societal crises of our time. Blending philosophical reflection with artistic and lyrical elements, the book invites readers to explore new ways of thinking and acting in the face of global upheaval. An ensuing discussion will delve deeper into the book’s central themes.

Art and Science in Dialogue

The exhibition “Fixing Futures. Planetary Futures Between Speculation and Control”, on view through August 31, 2025, presents international artistic and scientific visions for actively shaping the future, and addresses the challenges of a transforming world. The museum also offers a series of guided dialogues and workshops inviting visitors to deepen their understanding of the exhibition themes and explore their own visions of the future.

Object Lesson – Collected Futures
Tuesday, June 17, 2025, 6 p.m.
An interactive event in which objects from Goethe University’s collections open up new perspectives on visions of the future.

Dialogue Tour: Art and Science in Conversation
Wednesday, June 25, 2025, 5 p.m.
Dr. Manpreet Jattana, quantum physicist, joins a museum educator for a joint tour through the exhibition, offering insights into the interfaces between art, science, and future studies.
