University Council supports process for the establishment of a “Transfer and Competence Center Islam”

Approves award of a Goethe Research Professorship to Prof. Dr. Susanne Schröter

Goethe University Frankfurt is in the process of establishing a “Transfer and Competence Center Islam”. As part of this project, Prof. Dr. Susanne Schröter will receive a Goethe Research Professorship. The University Council approved the relevant application at a meeting held on July 17, 2023.

As part of the Goethe Research Professorship, Prof. Schröter will work on drawing up and implementing a comprehensive research and transfer center for Islam at Goethe University. This center will be jointly operated by Goethe University Frankfurt and the University of Giessen, and will bundle the existing expertise in Islamic research issues. Also involved are the Institute for the Study of Islamic Culture and Religion (ISKRI), the Center for Islamic Studies (ZEFIS), the project Academy for Islam in Research and Society (AIWG), the Frankfurt Research Center on Global Islam (FFGI), as well as other Goethe University professorships.

The Goethe Research Professorship program is part of the tradition of adjunct and distinguished professorship programs, which it combines with the aim of strengthening and further developing Goethe University’s research profile both in terms of structure as well as content. A Goethe Research Professorship is usually awarded for a period of up to two years. In the case of Prof. Schröter, this applies to the period after her retirement, and extends from October 1, 2023, to September 30, 2025.

Prof. Schröter submitted the application for a Goethe Research Professorship in December 2022, and – following a thorough review and in accordance with the relevant guidelines – approval was now granted. In addition to comprehensive application materials, the award of the professorship also required the demonstration of special qualifications, based on four reference letters from internationally recognized experts in the respective research field. The selection conforms with the German Research Foundation’s (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG) criteria for the selection of reviewers.
