From November 4: Goethe University invites you to the 11th Dagmar Westberg Lecture on the Westend Campus

FRANKFURT. “Value and Freedom in Kant’s Moral Philosophy”: American philosopher Prof. Christine M. Korsgaard (Harvard University) will discuss central aspects of and offer new interpretations on Kant’s practical philosophy in this year’s Dagmar Westberg Lectures. Established in 2012 and named after benefactor Dagmar Westberg, the Dagmar Westberg lecture series is a guest professorship aimed at promoting the humanities and cultural sciences. This year, the event is hosted by Faculty of Philosophy and History, the Institute of Philosophy, and the Normative Orders research center.

As one of the leading moral philosophers and interpreters of Kant of our time, Christine M. Korsgaard’s work focuses on explaining human dignity, establishing the foundation for right actions, and justifying the moral status of animals. As part of the Dagmar Westberg Lectures, she will explore in three talks some of the central questions of Kant’s practical philosophy while also offering innovative interpretations. The first lecture addresses the incomparable value of the individual and delves into what it truly means to be “an end in itself.” The second lecture is dedicated to the relationship between right and good actions, identifying autonomy as a key characteristic. The third lecture will thematically examine morality as a condition of our freedom.

About the Dagmar Westberg Lecture Series: Once a year, outstanding researchers from German and international universities, who are considered world leaders in their respective fields, are invited to Goethe University Frankfurt’s Westend Campus. As part of the guest professorship, they present in three or four lectures important new insights, groundbreaking theses, and further ideas on their research topics, followed by a colloquium at Goethe University’s Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften Institute of Advanced Studies. The lecture series was made possible by Dagmar Westberg, whose support allowed Goethe University to establish an endowment fund bearing her name, thereby ensuring the Dagmar Westberg Lecture Series as a permanent guest professorship.
